Il Giardino dei Tarocchi

Distance from Dolce Vita: 127 km – 1 ora e 20 minutes

Don’t be discouraged by the distance to reach this hidden gem.

The park was conceived and entirely created by the Franco-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle starting in 1979, inspired by her visit to Antoni Gaudì’s Parque Guell in Barcelona.

Identifying the Garden as the magical and spiritual dream of her life, Niki de Saint Phalle dedicated herself to the construction of twenty-two impressive figures in steel and cement covered with colorful glass, mirrors, and ceramics for over seventeen years. She was assisted not only by various skilled workers but also by a team of famous names in contemporary art such as Rico Weber, Sepp Imhof, Paul Wiedmer, Dok van Winsen, Pierre Marie, Isabelle Le Jeune, Alan Davie, Marina Karella, and, most importantly, her husband Jean Tinguely, who passed away in 1991. Tinguely created the metal structures for the enormous sculptures and integrated some of them with his mechanics, self-moving assemblies of mechanical elements in iron.

The statues, inspired by the figures of the major arcana of tarot cards, offer a surprising experience at the intersection of art and nature.
